Background of the Study
Hausa documentary films in Kano represent a unique fusion of visual storytelling and traditional narrative techniques. These films employ a range of narrative strategies—including voice-over narration, archival footage, and reenactments—to convey complex historical, cultural, and social narratives (Suleiman, 2023). The narrative strategies in these documentaries serve not only to inform but also to engage audiences emotionally, offering a window into Hausa traditions and contemporary issues. The use of narrative layering, intertextual references, and symbolic imagery contributes to a multifaceted storytelling approach that distinguishes documentary films from other cinematic genres (Bello, 2024). By integrating traditional storytelling elements with modern film techniques, Hausa documentaries in Kano provide a rich tapestry of cultural expression and historical documentation. This study investigates the narrative strategies employed in these films, analyzing how they structure content, evoke empathy, and preserve cultural memory in an evolving media landscape (Suleiman, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized cultural significance of Hausa documentary films in Kano, there is limited research focusing on the specific narrative strategies employed within this genre. Current studies often address film aesthetics broadly without delving into how narrative techniques are adapted to convey historical and cultural messages effectively (Garba, 2024). This research gap limits the understanding of the interplay between traditional storytelling and modern cinematic practices in Hausa documentaries. The study aims to fill this void by critically examining the narrative frameworks of Hausa documentary films, thereby elucidating their role in cultural preservation and social commentary.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify the narrative strategies used in Hausa documentary films.

  2. To analyze the integration of traditional storytelling techniques with modern filmic elements.

  3. To assess the impact of these strategies on audience engagement and cultural preservation.

Research Questions

  1. What narrative strategies are employed in Hausa documentary films in Kano?

  2. How do these strategies integrate traditional and modern storytelling elements?

  3. What is the impact of these narrative techniques on audience reception?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it offers a comprehensive analysis of narrative strategies in Hausa documentary films, contributing to film studies and cultural preservation efforts. The insights gained will inform filmmakers, cultural historians, and media scholars about the effective integration of traditional narrative techniques in modern documentaries. The findings underscore the role of cinema in preserving and transmitting cultural heritage (Suleiman, 2023; Bello, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the investigation of narrative strategies in Hausa documentary films produced in Kano and does not cover other film genres or regions.
